Education

DrawingHistorically, education in schools has been the most significant work in which Loreto sisters have engaged. Loreto is known for its schools in all the capital cities and in Ballarat and Portland.

In recent years the leadership in these schools has changed, but the Loreto traditions are still integral to the education carried on in them. The Institute is committed to maintaining these schools, ensuring that school councils, principals and staffs have access to the spirituality of Mary Ward, with support in the development of educational policies which unite the network of schools across Australia. On every School Council there are IBVM members while others continue to work in schools in various ancillary roles, and we are proud that we have handed on to excellent lay leadership schools that continue to offer first class education.

With StudentThis is our vision: that Loreto schools offer a Catholic education which liberates, empowers and motivates students to use their individual gifts with confidence, creativity and generosity in loving and responsible service.

St Mary's College, Melbourne University

St Mary's residential college is another work traditionally in Loreto sisters' care. St Mary's is owned by the Archdiocese of Melbourne, and run by a College Council, but since its foundation in 1918 the Principal has been an IBVM sister. Co-educational since 1977, St Mary's gives witness to the joy and energy of young women and men as they explore new horizons in an atmosphere of trust and a call to personal responsibility.

Teaching in Tertiary Institutions

Loreto has a long involvement in Higher Education. From the early days when Mary Gonzaga Barry founded a Teachers' College, the IBVM has expanded into tertiary education in every state on Australia's mainland. A number of other sisters continue to be called to use their gifts in the tertiary field, as it has developed in recent years. In departments of English, Fine Arts, Education and Theology Schools they have brought and continue to bring Gospel priorities into dialogue with their own fields of lecturing and research.
