About Mary Ward International
The office of Mary Ward International (MWI) was opened in 2002 by the Loreto Branch of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (IBVM). The founding rationale of MWI is to facilitate collaboration with the Loreto Sisters as they work throughout the world for justice and sustainable development within a spiritual framework. Loreto Sisters are involved in both formal and non-formal education, parish and pastoral ministries, spiritual ministries, social justice advocacy, counselling, community health, community development, prison ministry, interfaith dialogue and refugee work.
Mary Ward saw a need in her times and responded with courage and creativity. Born in Yorkshire, England in 1585, Mary gathered a few companions who shared her concern for women, for justice and for the faith of her oppressed contemporaries. Despite intense opposition from the Church because her ideas for women were seen as radical, other young women joined her and devoted themselves to the education for young women, both rich and poor. They were prepared to move into other cultures and projects as new needs became clear. She invited her followers to become seekers of truth and workers of justice. Her charism and work continues today.
