2016 LSAC Student Leadership Conference

The weekend of November 25th to 27th was an important one on the Loreto calendar as the annual Student Leaders Conference was held, starting at Loreto Toorak and moving to Loreto Ballarat. A highlight this year was the participation for the first time of two representatives, Jess Low and Gabriele Maluga, from John XXIII College in Perth.
During the weekend, the girls were fortunate to hear from:
- Sr Trish Franklin: It is always a joy to listen to Trish. In her unique way, Trish managed to inspire the girls and to also impart a blueprint of the essential traits of good leaders. Her advice centred on the responsibility and sacrifice that comes with leadership and the need to mix with, and listen to, fellow students.
- Kim Nass: Kim was able to provide feedback to the girls of where their fundraising was put to use and likely projects for the future.
- Jeff Burn: Jeff’s role highlights to the girls that Loreto is bigger than their own school.
- Michelle McCarty: Michelle is a gifted communicator who has long been involved in the organisation of this conference.
- Sr Marg Sculley: Sr Marg is a wonderful example of the dignity and service that characterises our Loreto Sisters.
- Mr Peter Rix: Peter has a lifetime of religious education behind him. He generously donated his weekend to facilitate the writing of the Freedom prayer.
- Ms Robin Scott: Robin is the province archivist at Loreto Ballarat.

All of the adults working with the girls commented on how impressive this group of student leaders is. The enthusiasm, intelligence and sincerity of the group was immediately evident. It is a testimony to the discernment process that is occurring in our schools that such impressive girls are chosen for leadership positions.
During the weekend the girls composed the 2017 Freedom Prayer. They will introduce this prayer to their respective schools on their return. Two important themes captured is that freedom is the confidence to accept yourself as you are and not as others might want you to be. While resilience under pressure is also a crucial stepping stone to achieving freedom.
