Overview
The house on the edge of Lake Wendouree that was to become Loreto Convent, Mary’s Mount, had been built by Edward Agar Wynne, Ballarat business man and politician in the 1860s. It was on three acres of land “well planted and well fenced”. The house faced Lake Wendouree but later the Sturt Street side became the front entrance.
First Mass was said on 23rd September on the Feast of Our Lady of Mercy and the school was opened on 29th September 1875 on the Feast of St. Michael when the first boarders arrived.
