Loreto celebrates the commissioning and blessing of Christine Shaw
On Friday 22 May, the Loreto Ballarat community gathered for a special Eucharistic Celebration to officially commission and bless the College’s 32nd Principal, Christine Shaw.
The Mass, led by the Bishop of Ballarat, Bishop Mark Freeman, and Fr Justin Driscoll, was an opportunity to formally welcome Chris and seek God’s blessing as she embarks on her leadership of the College community.
Loreto Sisters, representatives from Loreto Ministries, Loreto Ballarat Board directors and leaders from many other schools, together with students, staff, alumni, invited guests, and family members joined together for the occasion, which highlighted the College’s strong Catholic identity and shared commitment to faith, learning and service.
Students were central to the celebration, participating with grace, reverence, and leadership, which included performances by the Loreto Concert Band and Loreto Choir.
In her speech, Chris reflected on the significance of the commissioning celebration, sharing her desire for the occasion to embody Loreto College as an ‘open house’ where all are welcome. She spoke of the spirit of inclusion and belonging that has long been central to a Loreto education, fostering awe, wonder and curiosity in generations of students.
She spoke about ‘our place in creation and the joy of human love’, highlighting our responsibility to care for creation in all its forms and to nurture meaningful connections with one another. She reflected on the importance of recognising the precious moments that shape our lives and communities.
A memorable moment of the day came when a hot air balloon drifted above the College, as Chris walked through the College gates, which she saw as a sign from loved ones who could not be present for the occasion but remained close in spirit.
She acknowledged that the Loreto community is made up of people from diverse backgrounds and experiences, united by a shared sense of connection and humanity. Referencing Mary Ward’s “open circle of friends”, Chris said that true unity comes not from sameness but from embracing differences and diversity, creating a strong sense of belonging for all.
Expressing her gratitude and humility, Chris said she was honoured to be entrusted with leading Loreto College Ballarat into its next 150 years, building on its rich heritage while continuing to foster a welcoming and connected community for future generations.
