Music Can Change the World
Gianni Corvaia
There may be two centuries between them, but musician Gianni Corvaia (Nedlands ’08) couldn’t agree more with Beethoven’s famous words. Growing up in Perth, Gianni’s early years were filled with music thanks to his musician father, Robert Corvaia. “When I was young, he [Dad] would always bring me along to his shows, which encouraged me to fall in love with music at a young age”, Gianni recalls.
And fall in love, he did. Gianni was drawn to music throughout his education. His musical abilities and appreciation of this art form were nurtured through the Music Program at Loreto Nedlands, and he went from strength to strength.
Experiencing first-hand the benefits of music in early childhood development, Gianni is now inspiring the next generation of music artists through his work as a teacher in schools across Perth, including walking the halls of Loreto Nedlands once again. “Music is such a great outlet for children and an opportunity for them to express themselves and gain confidence.”
Whilst a rewarding practice, Gianni’s greatest love will always be songwriting. One look at music profiles across Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and TripleJ Unearthed (famous for uncovering many successful Australian music acts) reveals several original tracks with rave reviews of cool, calm melodies, infectious beats and superb vocals. To Gianni, it is music’s unpredictability that is magical and inspiring. He describes music as a way to express oneself when traditional language may fail, something that transcends cultural and geographical boundaries and can connect people of all backgrounds.
Gianni learned “the importance of cultivating a love and passion for music, above all else” at a young age. That passion has now taken him across the country to Melbourne, described as Australia’s musical home, to pursue his songwriting career. With new songs currently in the works, Gianni is excited for what the future holds and hopes to continue to teach music whilst writing and producing his own. Looking back, he is grateful for the opportunities provided by his education, particularly his time at Loreto Nedlands…
“It has allowed me to share my music with people all over the world and collaborate with those who share the same passion.”
